An hour later, Jeff and I reached Bristol, driving alongside the harbour with the SS Great Britain ship on our right. Constance sat on the dash. I’d had to bring her with me because I could not expect Lynn to keep an eye on her any longer.

I looked at the map app on my phone. “It’s one of those flash apartments with balconies overlooking the harbourside.”

“I can’t park in the multi-storey; the van is too tall. I’ll drop you and then park at College Green.”

“Will you be alright waiting in the van with Constance?”

My cat hissed.

“Look, Connie cat, I can’t take you into some swanky flat.”

Jeff dropped me outside the apartment block. I walked up to the entrance and buzzed Fiona’s apartment.

Fiona answered the intercom. “You’re early.” She paused. “Come on up, it’s the penthouse.”

Once inside, the lift opened, and a man came out with his head down, wearing a tweed flat cap.

“Good morning,” I said.

He didn’t even look up or acknowledge me. I tutted as the lift doors closed. It was obviously the sort of neighbourhood where you did not pass the time of day with anyone. I pressed the button for the penthouse.

As I came out of the lift, I heard electric power tools.

Fiona waved me into her beautiful apartment. There were workmen fitting kitchen cabinets. “I’ve always wanted an industrial style kitchen,” she said.

She was having aluminium worktops installed and two large ovens side by side. Clearly, she liked to cook. Her set-up was looking somewhat more professional than mine and I was a caterer. I stared at Fiona, who had her hair tied up and wore glasses.

“Let’s have coffee. I’ll order it in. There’s a shop downstairs, they’ll send it up for me.” She phoned down an order for our coffees and then led me to a huge lounge, which had views of the small city harbour. The whole area had been turned into a luxury living space, a far cry from the days of trade. She sat beside me on the grey fabric sofa. “What a nasty business. I still can’t believe it.”

“I know. If you don’t mind, I want to get a picture of everyone at Corelli’s that night.” I pulled out my phone to take notes. “I take it Eddie wasn’t popular with Councillor Levison?”

Fiona laughed. “And the rest of the Council.”

“Why did Mrs Levison want to meet Eddie?”

“You’ll have to ask Gina yourself.”

“How well did Eddie know her?”

“They went back a long way. He knew her way before I met him and before she met Nigel. I think they met at church.” She touched the back of her head. “I’ve never been that keen on her myself. He saw a lot less of her after we became an item. I hadn’t seen her for over a year.”

“So, there was nothing ever romantic between them?”

Fiona gave a short, sarcastic laugh. “You have seen her?”

I pictured Gina in my head. I guess she was nowhere near as glamorous as Fiona. “And the waitress? Had you seen her before?”

“The Italian?” Fiona said in an airy voice.
